Crowe discusses Navarre founder before record crowd

Libbi Crowe (inset above), local geneologist and history buff, talked about the colorful founder of Navarre, Guy H Wyman, to the year's first meeting of the Lore, Legends and Learning @ the Library Tuesday, Jan. 31. The program attracted an all-time record of 68 listeners, largest in the four-year history of the program.

Crowe reviewed Wyman's four wives and his history as a soldier and surveyor. Crowe said that while Wyman generally is called "Colonel" in various reports, he was a major when he was forced out of the U.S. Army during a court-martial.

The program is part of the free Lore, Legends and Learning series at the Library is sponsored by the Friends of the Navarre Library at 5:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month through October. It presents a variety of topics to the public. Reservations are not required.

Part of a record crowd waits to hear Libbi Crowe speak about the founder of Navarre.

New library director appointed to permanent position

Bernice (Gwen) Wilson, who has been interim library director for Santa Rosa County for about eight months, was appointed full-time director Thursday, Jan. 26, by the Board of County Commissioners.

Wilson succeeded Linda Hendrix, the county’s first library director, on an interim basis in July 2011.

Before stepping into the director’s office, Wilson was manager of the Milton Library. Previously she was a volunteer and employee at Navarre. She has masters degrees in human relations and library science.

As director, she will oversee the Santa Rosa County Library System and its five libraries in Navarre, Gulf Breeze, Milton, Pace and Jay.

Godwin spoke to the Lore, Legends and Learning at the Library on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The popular informational series, free to the public, convenes on the last Tuesday of each month January through October.
